Blog

Here's where the magic happens. I'll be posting about all of my experiences and experiments (both failed and successful ones), introducing you to my costumes, sharing fun stories, linking tutorials and useful products, and who knows what else!

I'm not dead yet

Michael MacWolff

Hey everyone! I'm finally getting back in the swing of things from the rather long and eventful holiday which included (but certainly wasn't limited to) much family time, lots of nerdy gifts, seeing TFA twice, both being fancy and dancing and singing while standing on out seats for New Years, and many other wonderful things. While I don't have a ton to share this week as the bulk of my work has been powering through the remaining pieces of [SECRET COSPLAY], I have actually made some progress with one commission: the Fat Man I've been working on from Fallout. It's been particularly fun to work on considering I'm still spending as much time as I can (when I'm not furiously painting or giving myself blisters from using worbla)  playing Fallout 4.

Anyway, here's what the Fat Man looks like at the moment, which I realize isn't much...

So I wish there was more I could show you, but I do have to say I am SUPER PUMPED about the cosplay I can't show you yet. Thankfully there's only a week and a half until Ohayocon so you'll be able to see photos soon!

As a parting thing, check out the awesome NERV patch I added to my jacket :-)

Merry Christmas from MDC

Michael MacWolff

Hello my loves. I must apologize for my lack of updates and blog entries this month. With the swiftly approaching holiday, my etsy store has seen more traffic than ever before, which is very exciting and also exhausting. Unfortunately it also means I've literally done no cosplay work in the entire month of December, for my secret cosplay or otherwise. It's going to be a crunch getting everything I'm hoping to have done for Ohayocon this January, but I'm confident things will work out just fine.

Anyway, while I haven't got any real cosplay progress to show you guys, I do have some fun nerdy things related to the holiday, even if they're not strictly cosplay related.
The year before last I gave my husband a pair of fleece pajama pants that were designed after Unit 01's legs.

While I generally hate making pants, these were actually a lot of fun, though I did have to adjust the length when we discovered they didn't fit quite right. Well, this year he's finally completing the Evangelion Unit with this matching hoodie.

It took almost a full week worth of work while he was out of the house to finish this thing, but it's finally done and I'm super happy with how it turned out. SOme day maybe I'll make myself a matching Unit 02 outfit but right now I don't have time for that >_<

Also, in the spirit of the season and with the new Star Wars movie coming out (don't worry, I won't have any spoilers on here or anywhere else until at least after New Years, if ever), I decided to craft some special decorations for our Christmas party.

This Star Destroyer got the classic Rudolph car treatment. Let's hope they don't fall off when they go into hyperspace.

Hope you enjoyed the festivities! That's about all for now, I imagine it'll be January before I have anything more useful to contribute here, but I hope you all enjoy your holidays! Much love from Mikey Does Cosplay!

Constant Progress

Michael MacWolff

Hey folks, I'm back again with a WIP wednesday edition of Mikey Does Cosplay. It'll be a short entry this week with my continued inability to show you progress on what I'm making for myself, but that suit of armor I've been working on continues to slowly grow and become more complete. At this point I've finished building all of the torso pieces and now have the tassets done too!

For those of you unfamiliar with armor anatomy, the tassets are the parts that sit on your hips/outside of the upper leg.

So without further ado, let me just show you what all that looks like...

The other fun new things I've started working on are another commissions from my cousin & his fiancee who're doing Sokka & Suki from Avatar the Last Airbender! Thankfully they won't be needing them until next April, so I haven't had to start on the actual costumes yet, but I have made the base of Sokka's weapons and I'm excited to finish them!.

The other update I wanted to tell everyone about is that I've been doing more work on the site, so there are a few new pages and updated info! First of all, I've finally started putting together the Materials section of the Cosplay Help Desk. It isn't complete by any means, but I have started working on it and will continue adding things little by little. For everything on there, you'll see photos of the material itself, an explanation of some benefits and how it can be used, and some examples of things I've made using it (with photos of course). I also have links to where you can buy it online (most of it's through Amazon), and where you can find it in stores, if you can in fact find it in a store.
The second site update I've been working on (though it's not live yet) is a blog index. I'm kind of frustrated that Square doesn't have a tool to do this automatically, or at least not one I've found yet, but I want you to be able to access any blog entry more easily than the current method, which is to go back through all of them until you find it. I thought the "Featured" blog post feature that has them on the main page would keep all of them, but alas it only has the most recent 10. So I've put together the full list myself, tags and all, for your simplified browsing and will try to keep it updated as much as possible! You can find it in the footer below, or right here!

Thanks, my dearies, for stopping in, and Happy Thanksgiving!
