Tutorials
I find most of my tutorials on Pinterest, so you can check out the full and totally unorganized list here, the rest I've tried to put together in some semblance of organization. Enjoy, and if you find anything that you think would be good to add here, let me know!
New to cosplay
If you’re just getting into cosplay and are looking for some general insight, here are a couple of articles you can check out (thanks to Addy for recommending both of these):
Once Upon A Cosplay: Top Tips From A Disney Cosplayer on Coaching for Geeks
Measuring Yourself for Cosplay on Coscove - This is one of the best measurements tutorials I’ve seen, particularly if you’re measuring yourself for the purpose of commissioning a cosplay
Props and Armor
Foamcore Board Props by Fire Lily Cosplay
This is essentially how I make half of my props these days, so a lot of the information here will look familiar!
Cardboard Props
Cardboard is great and inexpensive, and fairly sturdy, plus you can do a lot of stuff with it. There are several tutorials under this one so I'll organize it by what they're making in each tutorial
Reaper Wings (this one's actually mine, who would’ve thought?)
Various Props (there's a lot of good stuff on here with using cardboard for a variety of projects)
EVA foam
Another awesome and inexpensive material to make a variety of things
Armor by kinpatsu cosplay (this has some good info for patterning as well as using the foam for making your armor)
General EVA/Craft Foam Tutorial (This has a lot of good general info and where to purchase materials)
Shaping (how to achieve curves and other shapes in foam, there's some worbla stuff in there too)
Tooling (engraved designs in craft foam)
Open-Cell Foam
I've made a few things out of this, like Brady's Staff and Libra's Axe. Not my favorite method but it works for more voluminous items when you want them to be lightweight and not have to cut out 5000 layers of foamcore.
Leather
Worbla
This is super useful and leftover bits can be heated up and molded sor details in other projects!
Foam Base Sword with Worbla Overlayer by AmenoKitarou <-- This is how I do a lot of my worbla stuff
Resin/Plastic Casting and similar techniques
Painting
Misc./Unique items
Fabric, Sewing, Etc.
New to sewing? There's a great collection of knowledge and tutorials to get you started here. It has everything from patterning to sewing buttons, using different kinds of fabrics, and all kinds of useful things! (Thanks Katie, Jan, and the other young ladies for submitting this resource!)
Another good general resource for new sewers can be found here. This one has some good information about hand stitches as well as learning to use a sewing machine. (Thanks to Denise for submitting!)
Drafting a Pattern from Existing Clothing / Drafting Tutorial B Both of these tutorials show you how to make a pattern without taking the existing garment apart, which is great! You can also go to the thrift store and find something that fits, is cheap, and *can* be taken apart to use as your base pattern (that's what I usually do).
Installing a Zipper / Alternative Zipper Method (The second one also show you how to shorten a zipper, but this doesn't apply to separating zippers)
Using Single-Fold Bias Tape - Single fold bias tape will give you a clean edge around an arm hole or other raw edge without giving you a strip of color along your outline. This is useful if you're not lining your costume.
Using Double-Fold Bias Tape - Double fold bias tape folds around both sides of the edge of your fabric, so it will give you a stripe of color along the edge where you add it. A lot of anime designs have colorful borders along the edges of garments so double-fold bias tape is a great way to achieve that.
Installing Welt Pockets - Welt pockets are the small pockets on vests and similar garments where a pocket is added to a solid piece of fabric, rather than a traditional pocket where it's added in along a seam. Lots of designs have them so it's a useful thing to know how to make, because real pockets are always useful.
Armsocks - A useful tool for strange skin colors on your hands so you don't have to paint them.
Dying Fur - Finding the proper colored fur can be difficult, and fur can't be dyed in the traditional sense, but it can be done with this method!
Removing Stains of All Kinds - Costumes are time-consuming to make and expensive to buy. Either way you’ll want to take the best care of it you can. This tutorial gives pointers for removing a variety of different types of stains (Thanks for submitting this, Anna!!)
Fiber Arts
Quilting, Knit/Crochet, and Embroidery - This has a bunch of info about different fiber crafts so it’s a good place to start if you’re interested in any of that (Thanks for the submission Sidney!)
Quilting Primer - This is a great resource for anyone interested in quilts; it has some history behind the craft, lots of links to tutorials and tools, and even info about quilting communities and conventions! (A big thanks to Aubrey for the submission!)
Crochet Basics (Thanks Jackie & Ava for submitting!)
Needle Felting for Beginners by Felts by Philippa - I’ve been doing a lot of needle felting lately and this is a nice little intro video into the world of felting, complete with a variety of links for materials and other resources for getting into the craft
